Tawang

Tawang is a town located in the northwestern part of the state of Arunachal Pradesh, in Northeast India. It is adjacent to the border with Bhutan and is set amongst the mighty Himalayas at an 
altitude of 3400 m above sea level. The town is famous for many important and beautiful monasteries, and is the birthplace of the 6th Dalai Lama, Tsangyang Gyatso.

The history of Tawang is unclear. It was once a part of Tibet and was governed by local tribal rulers. However, the British declared the area off-limits in 1873. After India gained independence 
in 1947, the area around Tawang became a source of conflict between India and China. The Chinese army invaded Tawang in 1962 but later withdrew.

The beautiful town of Tawang, pronounced as Dawang, is popular among tourists for its many scenic spots. However, what sets this town apart is its significance to Buddhist monks. Tawang is home 
to many monasteries, with the Tawang Monastery being the most popular and sacred to Buddhists. The monastery is a beautiful sight, and it's surrounded by the natural beauty of the area. The 
orchid sanctuary and the Tipi Orchid Sanctuary are also must-see stops for visitors.
